Noteworthy: Nationals was an amazing experience! I echo what Kris has said (see below) that the swimming was just a small part of the whole thing. Not lonely did we get to know swimmers from around the State of Michigan, with whom we typically compete, but we also got to spend valuable time with our own MAC teammates and get to know each other better. I strongly suggest that everyone set a goal to swim at National Meet. The competition may be stiff but the experience, friendships, and memories will be more than worth the training and effort put into getting to race on that stage! Now, set our sights to Arizona for Spring Nationals in 2019!

Please read through the calendar, many new additions!

From the Coaches:

Kris: What an amazing four days! When everyone came back after 2013 I was determined to go to Nationals this year and it was everything I thought it would be and so much more. Honestly the swimming was fun but such a small part. Not only did I get to meet so many of our fellow swimmers from Michigan but I met swimmers and coaches from all parts of the country.  All the other stuff that I spent my time doing made the experience worth the wait.  The best parts for me were not the hours I put into the training or the races that I swam. The best parts were cheering all of you on and taking your pictures, talking and sharing with all the other Michigan coaches (being on the same side and not against them like at State meet!), getting to meet and put faces to my rivals in my age group and swim on a relay with them, coach some rookies from other teams (and some other coaches!), hanging with the MAC team at dinners at night and learning their stories a little more, celebrating your great swims and giving lots of hugs on deck.

If you didn’t get a chance to come with us I would encourage you to think about coming when you have a chance the next time. It’s in Arizona next year so it’s a little farther but I’m going to make the effort to go again. You didn’t have to be in great shape, swim fast, or swim PR in every event to be there – you just had to go to have fun.

Thanks everyone for a wonderful time. I’m off for the summer so I will see you all in September!

Dianne: We will begin open water training on the Saturday workouts moving forward into the summer.

On a Personal Note: MAC continues to shine for the State of Michigan; here are the National Championship titles won by MAC swimmers. And click the link below for a complete list of results from Team MICH at Nationals.

MAC National Champions:

Laura Gogola: 80-84 200IM, 400IM, 75+ 200 F Relay

Rita Gelman: 85-89 50FR, 50BK, 75+ 200 F Relay

Pat Butler: 75+ 200 F Relay

Martha Amis: 75+ Mixed 200 F Relay, 75+ Mixed 200 Medley Relay

Peggy Bruin: 75+ Mixed Medley Relay

Those were just some of the wonderful things we witnessed over the weekend! We showed the State of Michigan and the Nation that we are MAC Strong and a #BAN. There were many PR’s over the weekend. Some of the highlights would be Carol Schemanske swimming the 200 Fly on the National Stage! Maria Veen swimming a virtually perfect race in the 200 Fly, Jim Izzi and Chuck Olsen’s 500 FR, April Maunu’s 100 FR, Kim Riley’s 100 FR, Tom Welsh’s 100 FR, just to name a few! Also we would be remiss is we didn’t throw a shout out to Patrick Sturdy for competing at Nationals with a broken hand!
