Swimmer of the Week:

Abbey Anselmi

Hi my name is Abbey Anselmi and this is my 3rd year with MAC.  I am a second grade teacher at St. Patrick School in Brighton and I have been teaching for 9 years. I love to travel and one of my goals is to make it to all 7 continents. I am currently at 4/7. I have 2 dogs, Dottie and Shelby, who love camping and being in any water with my husband and I. I am extremely competitive and board games are a favorite family activity.

One of my earliest memories is swimming to my mom as she was doing the “I’m not walking backwards” move so I had to swim farther. I first joined my summer swim team in Cincinnati when I was 7, and swam with them until I was 18. I was fortunate to be asked to join their coaching staff when I was 18, and I just wrapped up my 13th year coaching as their head coach. Coincidentally I coached a USA team in the winter called MAC for 5 years. Besides my summer club, I also swam for my high school team for 4 years and club at Miami University (OH) for 4 years. After college I joined my local masters team. In total, I have been competitively swimming consecutively for 24 years.

Masters practice in Cincinnati was where I met my husband Paul. If he thought I looked beautiful in a cap and goggles, it must be a good sign. Paul works for Toyota and we relocated to Brighton in 2017. After we moved, I still wanted to swim and luckily I found MAC. The coaching staff and swimmers are amazing and I have loved practicing and competing with them. I found out after state last year that I was pregnant with our first child. I kept swimming and competing all throughout my pregnancy; only butterfly seemed to make the baby mad. My husband and I welcomed our beautiful baby girl Rosalie Greer on January 7th. She was 7 lbs .03 oz and has beautifully long swimmer arms and legs. I pray she has my technique but Paul’s speed in the water.

MAC Swimmers are the greatest advertisements of all! We love how you share your stories on social media, with friends, etc. We would like to share your stories as well. Each week we will highlight a MAC Swimmer so we can learn more about the team.

Sculling

By: Kris Goodrich

How to Improve Your Movement Through the Water
My fascination with sculling began in a high school lifeguard class. My teacher taught us many different types of sculls and as the only girl in the class I took it upon myself to be the best in the class at the skill.  Most of the boys were faster swimmers than I but I could scull forwards, backwards, spin, and even hold my legs straight out of the water upside down. As I started teaching and coaching swimming I spent many years sculling forwards and backwards along with my swimmers. It was not only useful for teaching but I also got faster and stronger as well. I was feeling pretty confident about my ability to scull with my little hands until a chance encounter with a turtle while scuba diving in the Cayman Islands. A couple flicks of his flippers and the ungainly land animal was twenty feet away from me. I was left yards behind and as hard as I tried could not catch him. After all these years what was I doing wrong and how could I do it better?
What is sculling?
Sculling is a back and forth motion with your hand, like you are drawing a figure eight. Your elbows should stay relaxed and there is minimal movement from the shoulders. READ MORE.. CLICK HERE
