News:

Congratulations to all who attended the South Lyon meet over the weekend! The meet saw a great turnout with around 100 swimmers, 23 of them MAC! We had a great meet with many fantastic swims resulting in a lot of silver medals earned for MAC Olympics! There’s still time to earn those medals! MAC Swimmers to attend were as follows:
South Lyon: (23)
John Cassidy, Bill Caldwell, Corinne Caldwell, Heidi Ward, Denise Costanzo, Hong Weng, Mitzi Amelon, Ann Ward, Carol Schemanske, Abbey Anselmi, Steve Hertz, Ryan Noechel, Rita Gelman, Mike Smith, Jeff Yencer, Patrick Sturdy, Jim Izzi, Kris Goodrich, Coleman Teach, Don Kroeger, Bill Porter, Sarah Craft, Paul Chadwick.

Congratulations to John Cassidy, for winning the MAC meet attendance raffle of a $10 Lottery ticket.  At each meet this season we will have a MAC attendance drawing. In order to be eligible for the drawing, simply come and swim in a meet and the coaches will do the rest!  Prizes will vary by meet.

Swimmer of the Week:

Martha Amis

I grew up well before Title IX was passed in 1972, and athletics was not really on my radar until I read Ken Cooper’s book, Aerobics, in 1968 and took it to heart. Running became my exercise of choice and commanded my allegiance (and still does), but in 2002 I retired from Ford and found myself with significant precious time at my disposal. It seemed an inner ‘athlete’ emerged in my consciousness, and I became eager to try out many sports and find those compatible with my nature. This led eventually to swimming and in particular to MAC where I discovered the reputation for great coaching that MAC enjoys. I have always enjoyed the water, but had never been exposed to the challenge and joy of learning that MAC inspires. It is mastering technique that appeals to me and brings me back, and we are given such a variety of ways to develop mastery: practices with individual attention, emphasis on being mindful during drills, swim clinics, swim videos, stroke filming, meet preparation.

As time and life march on, I am experiencing how valuable health is and the degree to which remaining active in body, mind and spirit supports good health. I count myself fortunate to share my life with Michael, who also shares my love of swimming and several other activities. Between us we have five grown children and we often remind each other that one of the best things we can do for them is to live in a way that allows them to live their lives with little worry for us.

MAC Swimmers are the greatest advertisements of all! We love how you share your stories on social media, with friends, etc. We would like to share your stories as well. Each week we will highlight a MAC Swimmer so we can learn more about the team.

During This Holiday Season…

MAC is giving back to Eastern Michigan University through donations of food and/or money to the Swoops emergency food pantry.  The pantry is open to all EMU students. Thank you to Terry Bond-Manville for suggesting this and also coordinating the donations!

If you want to donate money you can do so online through our MAC website CLICK HERE TO DONATE. We will do one large check from the team once donations have closed.  If you would rather give something concrete, you may drop items off on the pool deck.  We will have a bin out on our bleachers starting Monday where you can leave your items. Seasonal requested items are boxes of scalloped potatoes, green beans, hot cocoa, cookie decorations, mixed nuts, pumpkin pie spice, cranberry in a can, evaporated milk, canned gravy,  pie crust, candy canes; while they need refrigerated items (turkey, milk, eggs, etc.) that is when online giving is helpful.  Right now they also need ten turkeys for Thanksgiving.   Extra items include coffee creamer, soy milk, pasta sauce, cereal, dish soap, and can openers. If you are interested in donating one of the turkeys or a refrigerated item please contact Terry Bond-Manville directly at tbond-manville@att.net or 248-561-8167.

Any Thanksgiving items (turkeys) need to be donated by 11/23. All other items and online giving will close on 12/8 so that Terry will have time to get it to the food pantry.

About Swoops:  This was the brain child of one of my social work students, Haley Morenic.  She recognized the need for food within the university community.  To give  you an example of our student need, Eastern Michigan University School of Social Work has the highest number of non-traditional students who receive pell grant funds on campus, the highest number of single parents, a high number of students who receive federal assistance,  and yet we boast the HIGHEST GRADUATION rate on campus!

Thank you in advance to the MAC Family!
