From the Coaches:
Maria:
Melissa: Swimmer’s Itch Alert!

Unfortunately MAC is under attack by pesky parasites in Trout causing swimmers’ itch. We’ve had quite a few cases among us already that you may have already heard about.

Here’s some information about it:
Swimmer’s Itch is also called cercarial dermatitis. It’s a skin rash caused by an allergic reaction to infection with certain parasites of birds and mammals. These microscopic parasites are released from infected snails who swim in fresh and salt water, such as lakes, ponds, and oceans used for swimming and wading.
The rash and itching is your body’s allergic reaction to the parasites, and not everyone is allergic in the same way. Which is why some are more susceptible than others.
Each time your body is exposed, the more intense the reaction will be.
These are some tips and things you can do:
Apply sunscreen or zinc-based products, like Desitin Diaper Rash Cream, before swimming.
Swim in deeper water – this means perhaps swimming out and back in Trout vs. perimeter swims, and not lingering in the shallow water.
Get out of the water immediately and use clean water to scrub down.
Vigorously towel dry.
I have a case of swimmers’ itch but plan on taking extra precautions and return to swimming Trout this week. I’m going to lather on the sunscreen and bring a loofah to the beach, along with clean water, to scrub down with immediately after exiting the water. I will also wipe down with baby wipes on the beach vs. my old method of doing it at the car after the walk back.

Let’s show these little suckers what a MAC attack is really all about. They cannot have Trout all to themselves!
If anyone else has information or tips to pass along, please tell a coach about it or post it on Facebook.

Jim: National Senior Games: I just returned home from the National Senior Games in Birmingham, AL. What a great experience, and event! MAC was well represented. The swimming was divided into 2 sessions: Ages 65+ first session, and Ages 50-64 second session. First session (65+) Mac swimmers included: Bill Palmer, Jack Colliton, Peggy Bruin, Rita Gelman, EJ Charron and Pat Butler. All had great swims, and dominated the Awards Podium. Second session (50-65) Mac swimmers included: Kathy Burkhart, Jim Izzi, Suzanne Grebe, Steve Heaney, and John Riggs. Again, awesome swims, and MAC was well represented on the podium! Congratulations to all who participated!
The Michigan Senior Olympics will be Monday, August 14th at Oakland University. To register visit: www.michiganseniorolympics.org. Open to anyone ages 50 +. Registration deadline is Friday, July 21st.
Kris: Gone for summer season
Dianne: I’ll keep it short! Please don’t forget to RSVP to the transitions workshop THIS SATURDAY to Jim. One more week of the current schedule but please remember the Trout swims on Saturday and the Sunday morning Walnut Creek swims are in full force, I hope to see everyone this weekend at one of our many events!

On a Personal Note: One more week until summer officially starts! If you have an event coming up, please let us know! We tend to get busy in the summer and become slightly disconnected. Not everyone is on Facebook but everyone gets the emails! Let us know how you’re doing! And if you are on Facebook take a look at Elizabeth Schmaltz’s photos of Goat Yoga (yes, you read that right)! It’s yoga with baby goats!

Communication: If you have questions for any of the coaches don’t hesitate to ask! Here’s a quick list of emails to make that a bit easier!
