Weekly Practice Schedule

December 15th-21st, 2019

All practices will run as scheduled this week. Please CLICK HERE to visit our website, and view the MAC weekly practice schedule.

Thursday’s Practice: 12 days of technique and maybe some holiday “fun” as well.

News:

1. The MAC Holiday Party was fantastic! Special thanks to Gordon Frenette for hosting our party this year! All who attended had a great time with a very low-key, stress-free holiday sock exchange!

2. Thanks to all who came out on Saturday morning for our annual MAC Reindeer Relay’s! It was a great turnout to our Chirstmas Relays including a new swimmer trying MAC out for the first time. There were 2 teams: Elves and Reindeer! The Reindeer team jumped out to a fast lead but the Elves came back to win in the final event; the marshmallow (kickboard) stack!

3. In lieu of Clinics this holiday season, we will have regular MAC practices.

4. Monday, Dec. 30th: 100×100’s.  Join us for a celebratory New Years workout. It might sound like a lot, but don’t worry, we’ll mix up the effort, and strokes, and you can use/mix up toys of your choice. Typically we break around halfway for snacks so if you want to bring something shareable (fruit, muffins, etc) it’s a little added incentive to make it to the end!

Swimmer of the Week:

Coach Dianne Johnson

I have always been around water in one way or another. When I was little we had a pool in our backyard until it was struck by lightning and flooded the neighbor’s yards! After the pool was no more, my dad bought a boat and we began to spend a lot of time on the Ohio River. Around 11 years old, my brother Stephen, who had a job at an outdoor pool, got me on the swim team. While swimming that summer at Plantation a parent approached my and suggested that I look into year round swimming. At the time my mother was on the transplant list to receive a kidney. She waited almost a year to the day for her kidney and got her “second chance” in February of 1991. I started swimming year round at Lakeside the following summer at 13 years old. I quickly realized that swimming was my sport, making my Junior National cut in the 50 FR the next winter.  Two years later, as a sophomore in High School, I received my first recruiting letter (from Cornell) it wasn’t until then that I had thought swimming could be my chance to go to college. Throughout the rest of High School I became a 3-time State Champion, made my Senior National cut, and narrowly missed qualifying for the 1996 Olympic Trials. As most of you know I decided to attend and swim for Michigan State after taking 5 recruiting trips to my top choice schools. My time at MSU were some of the best of my life so far. I swam a lot, making top 16 in the Big Ten all four years, becoming a captain my senior year and finishing my collegiate career competing at the 2000 Olympic Trials. I graduated with a degree in Parks and Recreation and met my future husband. After graduation however, swimming fell to the back burner while I attended a National Park Service and Colorado Peace Officers training academy and got my first job with the National Park Service at Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the Outer Banks in NC. After Phil and I were married and moved to Traverse City where he taught and I worked for Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, I began to miss that chlorine smell and swimming. I got involved in the local civic center and started a lunchtime workout group. From there it developed into a Traverse City Masters Team (now know as North Coast Masters Swimming). After coaching in TC for 5 years getting my feet wet I decided I wanted more. I got the opportunity to return to my alma mater and coach at MSU during the 2008-2009 season which was incredible. But, after 11 years in the Traverse City area and having our first child we decided to move closer to family and try our hands at swim coaching and High School directing respectively. In 2012, we moved to Wixom and Phil went to work and Brighton HS. At the time I was pregnant with Max and wanted to swim during my pregnancy and that is when I met Suzanne Grebe and was introduced to MAC! I had swum masters before and even attended Masters Nationals in 2004 but nothing hooked me back into the team life like MAC. There is truly nothing like this team, this family and I just couldn’t help but jump in with both feet (pun intended). I have been with this team now for 7 years, two pregnancies, and many wonderful times! I have been through a lot over the last 8 months and the support and love that this team has shown me continues to drive me and inspire me to be the best coach, friend, mom, and teammate I can be. So thanks to you my MAC family for reminding me how much I love this sport, for being the team that has become part of my family and for keeping my competitive spirit and drive alive! As my mom always used to say “PTL and PTOS” (Praise The Lord and Pass The Other Swimmers)!

MAC Swimmers are the greatest advertisements of all! We love how you share your stories on social media, with friends, etc. We would like to share your stories as well. Each week we will highlight a MAC Swimmer so we can learn more about the team.

Breakthrough:
Swim Outside Your Comfort Zone

We are creatures of habit. As we go through our days, weeks, years, and lives, we fall into habits of comfort in repetition.  We wake up at the same time, eat the same breakfast, stop at Starbucks and order the same drink. At work we perform our tasks in the same order and our day has begun its familiar pattern.

Being such creatures of habit can also manifest itself in our swimming.  We continually swim the same practice, the same familiar stroke at the same level of intensity, not wanting to push ourselves outside our comfort zone. Also, we have a favorite stroke and event, and choose these without consideration. As a coach I see this in swimmers all the time. When presented with a choice, swimmers will choose what feels familiar. At swim meets we sign up for our familiar events, which are our most comfortable strokes and distances. We do this year after year, and want to improve, but become disappointed when we don’t see any time improvement. The key to your breakthrough is; swim outside your comfort zone!
