From the Coaches:
Jim and Melissa: Wednesday AM and PM practices will include a 15-20 minute session of Rescue Tube Training for open water. This will be a quick session to give everyone some training on how to use their rescue tube, in case of emergency, and how to be safe in open water. Don’t miss this valuable and important training, in preparation for open water season.
Dianne: This week we will continue to work on slow drilling accompanied by building back an aerobic base for summer training in the pool. Look for slightly longer sets on Fridays Race Pace work building back up and increasing strength in the water.
On a Personal Note: I wanted to include the latest note from Barb Hertz’s daughter Lauren, as I am sure that many of you are wondering about her progress.
Hello friends and family,
Last week we learned that my mom’s first stem cell transplant was not successful. To put it simply, her body was more powerful than the doctors predicted and even with all of the chemo and medicine they gave her to knock down her immune system, her body was able to form antigens to fight off the “invading” cells. As a result, her immune system is coming back very slowly and the last 2 weeks have been very difficult.
The doctors were able to learn from what happened with this transplant and came up with a plan B. She will have another stem cell transplant, this time with her sister Faye’s cells. Faye is a 100% match to my mom’s HLA proteins, so this statistically our best chance at getting my mom’s body to accept a transplant. Faye was re-tested and approved on Monday and if all goes well, we expect the transplant to occur early next week. Once it happens, we expect it to take another 2-3 weeks to engraft before she can come home. We remain hopeful that this will lead to a long-term cure and a high quality of life for my mom.
Like everything in this process, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that my mom has somehow survived over a month in a neutropenic state without getting any infections and that her organs are all in good shape. The bad news is that she has been in the hospital since April 4 and even with the wonderful care she has gotten, this has been a very challenging environment for her mental health.
We ask for your help sending her positive messages and vibes. Again, she is very very low on energy and will probably not respond. We are doing our best to go through messages with her. Her cell phone number is 248 568 4245. Pictures, videos, and messages of hope and love are most appreciated.
If you feel like cooking, we are also having a hard time getting her to eat, so anything that is fully cooked (no raw food) is welcome. It’s best to bring small quantities of food and check and see what she is into, her taste buds change quite a bit from day to day but we do have a contraband toaster oven snuck in her room. She is able to have some visitors (you must be completely free of contagious disease) but please check with her or my dad before you go. Steve is at 248 978 6008.
With love,
Jenna, Lauren, Steve, David, and Jake
